A short blade designed to be affixed to the barrel of a rifle or similar weapon for use during close combat, bayonets allow ranged weapons to be used effectively in melee as well.
While Starfleet phaser rifles are not designed to accommodate an attached bayonet, there are several cultures in the galaxy where such weapons are a common sight. Some Klingon disruptor rifles feature a vicious, three pronged bayonet integrated into the frame.
Most detachable bayonets function identically to a knife or dagger when not attached to another weapon.

Design Notes: The disruptor rifles with the blades on extending past the barrel make a lot of sense for the Klingons, so I wanted that to be an option. It's not the first time a bayonet style weapon has appeared in a Star Trek show, but I do think they stand out a bit more on 'Discovery'.
