Starfleet personnel entering potentially hostile situations are outfitted with field vests. Made from lightweight materials, and designed to allow for freedom of movement the vests are not as sturdy as the bulkier armor sometimes worn by security teams, but still offer a measure of protection, possibly preventing lethal injuries.

Design Notes: The characters on 'Discovery' generally wear the field vests when entering potentially dangerous situations -- pretty much any time they leave the ship -- and I wanted to make that an option. The body armor presented in the ST:A Core Rulebook would have worked, but I thought having a field vest with a lower resistance be standard issue equipment was better suited to the depiction on the show.
